Oh Joy!!!

Any transport improvements costing more than a mug of tea and a sausage barm located north of the Watford Gap have been binned.

£560m of improvements are culled in Greater Manchester

Including:
£290m by-pass connecting the A6 near Stockport with the M56 at Manchester Airport.
£32m plan for 18 new park-and-ride sites across the region.
£30m inner relief road for Wigan have also been halted.
£100m for a slimmed-down relief road to replace the scrapped Mottram-Tintwistle bypass.
£50m package of train station improvements (Manchester Victoria, Oxford Road & Stockport all needed a lot work doing to them after being listed in the top 10 worst national stations)

Everything is okay though because we've got the Olympics to pay for and Crossrail is costing us billions of pounds but that's in London right!

I reckon if we stuck together all the flippin speed bumps that have appeared in this area recently we could build a by-pass to the airport!

Is that the A555 link or the SEMMS relief road?

The A555 extension is completion of the bit between B&poo at Stanley Green and the airport - not a big issue if they don't finish it but SEMMS is a different matter. I'm too young to remember its embryo but clearly traffic hasn't got any better through the Grove in the last 50 years - this must go ahead !!

It was the completion of the A555 from the Belfry Hotel to the Airport and from Woodford through to the A6 at Simpsons Corner. SEMMS was originally the full Airport to Bredbury link. The other side of the A6 through to Bredbury & the M60 had been removed from the latest submission about 5 years ago.

This isn't exactly breaking news. It was announced immediately after the election. What matters is whether it does go ahead after the review in the autumn - although I can't say I'm optimistic. It's 15 years since the middle bit of the A555 was opened. Farcical.

Local politicians need to do some lobbying. As Stockport is Lib Dem, there are some obvious levers they could apply.

Incidentally the SEMMMS web site (www.semmms.info) has been down for some time now. Maybe it's sulking.
