A lot of people are displaying signs in their windows on Hatherlow Lane and Station Street saying the folllowing:
" PLEASE DONT CALL HGBC "
Can anyone shed some light on what this is about??
Thank you

Presume HGBC is Hazel Grove Baptist Church. Maybe they've been knocking on doors and annoying the locals.

Hazel Grove Baptist are visiting the community and sharing with people what they are about and how they can serve the community. They are NOT cold calling and don't want to impose themselves on people but rather contacting people to let them know they are visiting. If people don't want them to call then they are requested to put these notices in their windows. I this way HGBC will only visit those who are happy for a visit.

Actually if they are knocking on peoples doors or calling them when not asked to do so, cold calling is exactly what they are doing!
Why should someone have to display a sign so they will not be pestered by someone trying to sell them something. I'm pretty sure if someone has an interest in religion, then they could quite easily either look on the internet or go to church to find out about it!
I mean really, how many people do these groups manage to convert on door step calls? I'd bet it's no where near the amount they annoy.

Why was my post deleted? Is it forbidden to make Monty Python references on the forum?

I believe such cold-calling denominations e.g baptists, witnesses and mormons do so because of a passage in the New Testament which if literally translated, instructs Christians to go to the doors of people's homes and spread the word. Please correct me if I am wrong as I am certainly no theologian.
As someone who has spent years knocking on the folks of Stockport's doors wanting to discuss politics and getting laughed at, sworn at, physically threatened, verbally abused and generally ignored in the process, I have a lot of sympathy for the door-knockers. Yes it is annoying when they do it and you saw them a month ago and are no more interested in the word of God than I am interested in the opinions of Polly Toynbee. BUT when you believe passionately in a cause that requires people to be a part of it for its goals to be realised, you never give up no matter how much rejection you face.
And why should they? It will be a very sad day when local community groups cease to exist. After all - there are far greater problems and issues in the world to complain about than having someone knock on your door every now and then.

I have to disagree with you there Oliver, people have the right to believe and practice any religion they want, but equally i have the right to not be harassed in my own home and have people trying to force their crazy ideas on me.
I'm sure they would take great offence if i were to knock on their door and try to convince them that they were crazy and told them that they should become atheists!
I've got no problem with people having religion in their lives, but i strongly object to them trying to force it on to others.
